Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Discovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
