Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
