TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company announced that it currently hosts more than 1 billion content made with AI.
Testing and Rollout
The new functionality is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement coincides with a surge in AI-generated material, fueled by new AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Recent reports that nearly a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is considered “AI slop”, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently nonsensical or bizarre.
“We know from our community that a lot of users enjoy content made with AI tools, ranging from digital art to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the ability to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
TikTok disclosed that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its app tagged as AI-generated. In total, more than 100 m videos are uploaded to the app each day, making clips made by AI a minor percentage of its complete catalog.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they view by using the “manage topic” setting in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the tool cover news, style, aesthetics, and dance.
Platform Guidelines
The platform’s guidelines oblige content makers to identify “realistic” AI-generated content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be taken down under its terms of service.
Additionally, the service will henceforth attach an artificially created tag to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying AI-generated material. This action is intended to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.
Educational Initiatives
TikTok is also introducing a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and organizations to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will support charitable organizations focused on educating programming and robotics.
Moderation Strategy
The platform has defended its moderation strategy, following controversy over proposals to make redundant hundreds of safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A senior executive explained that human moderation would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by removing the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by people. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
